COLUMBUS, Ohio - Improving to 3-0 on the season, the Ohio State women's swimming and diving team defeated Denison 178.5-110.5 Friday at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Coming off a strong week of practice, head coach Bill Dorenkott was especially pleased with the Buckeyes' performance and exhibition of the group's depth.
"This week we were just doing things better than the week before, not necessarily just in terms of the meet," Dorenkott said. "I think the hallmark of a championship caliber team is quality depth. This is the first time since I have been at Ohio State that we have that depth. It takes the pressure off of a couple individuals who might feel compelled to carry the team on their backs."
Finishing in a time of 1:46.71, the team of Reanna Dona, Angela Severn, Nichole Gill and Kristina Kontrimas started the night strong with a win in the 200 medley relay. Junior Kristyn Fulcher followed with a win of her own in the 1000 freestyle (10:25.66), while freshman Sara Craft took second in 10:32.56.
Junior Kelly Titus led the way in the 200 freestyle, posting a win in a time of 1:52.01. Ohio State also took the 100 backstroke event with senior Lauren Massey and junior Kelly Ann Baird taking the Top 2 spots. Massey dropped a time of 57.59, while Baird touched in 58.33.
Leading the Ohio State sweep of the 100 breaststroke was sophomore Ashley Vance. A native of Kingwood, Texas, Vance placed first in 1:06.35. Continuing the winning trend, the Buckeyes took the 200 butterfly and 50 freestyle with victories from Phoebe Cater and Annie Jongekrijg, respectively.
The Scarlet and Gray returned after a brief break in action with a 98.5-32.5 lead over the Big Red. Senior Megan Detro then claimed a win in her signature event, the 100 freestyle (51.44). In the 200 backstroke, Alex Norris dropped a time of 2:04.85 for a first-place finish.
With her second win of the night, Titus posted a win in the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.57. Norris also added to her win total with a first-place showing in the 100 butterfly (57.13). In the 200 individual medley, senior Shannon Draves touched first in 2:06.83.
In diving, last week's Big Ten Diver of the Week Cheyenne Cousineau recorded a win on the 1-meter springboard with 315.90 points.
The Buckeyes will return to action next weekend with two road duals in a 24-hour period. Ohio State faces Tennessee at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 before facing Ohio at 1 p.m. Nov. 10 in Athens.
