Buckeyes Victorious at 50th Annual Dennis Stark Relays

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving started its season off Friday evening on a positive note, winning the 50th Annual Dennis Stark Relays hosted by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. With a total team score of 194, the Buckeyes outlasted the runner-up Fighting Irish, as well as contingents representing Illinois State and Olivet Nazarene.

The Buckeye 200 freestyle relay of Zhesi Li, Rachael Dzierzak, Macie McNichols and Ashley Vance kicked off the winning trend with a first-place finish in 1:34.23. In the 400 medley relay, the quartet of Zulal Zeren, Taylor Vargo, Aliena Schmidtke and Annie Jongekrijg touched with a mark of 3:50.86, which was also a win for the Scarlet and Gray. With the impressive finishes, Ohio State gained 40 points toward the team total.

The next event for the Buckeyes was the 800 freestyle relay. With a strong start from sophomore Lindsey Clary, the grouping of Katy Luchansky, Kathleen Cook and Annie Gillig placed first. The relay outlasted Notre Dame with a time of 7:31.13.

Moving on to the 400 individual medley, Ohio State’s Vance, Zara Bailey, Lauren Davis and Annelise Sprau recorded the team’s fourth win of the evening in a time of 3:55.04. The Buckeyes placed second to the Fighting Irish in the 3x100 butterfly relay, behind swims from Schmidtke, Amanda McNulty and Amy Bopp.

In backstroke action, OSU’s trio of Zeren, Camey Rabold and Gillig earned a win, touching in a collective time of 2:47.65. The Buckeyes also took home the 3x100 breaststroke race, with Vargo, Bopp and Vance repping the Scarlet and Gray.

Ohio State finished the meet by adding another three wins to their total. The Buckeyes sat on top the leaderboard in the 2x500 freestyle with touches from Cook and Clary, while the quartet of Rabold, Dzierzak, Sprau and Cheyenne Meek placed first in the 200 medley 4x50 relay.  In a time of 3:27.30, Ohio State’s Li, McNichols, Schmidtke and Jongekrijg took the 400 freestyle 4x100 relay.

Ohio State will kick start the 2014-15 campaign with the Scarlet vs. Gray exhibition meet Friday, Oct. 17 at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The event is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
