COLUMBUS, Ohio - On the opening day of competition at the 2015 NCAA Championships, the Ohio State women's swimming and diving team qualified two individuals for the evening finals session, as well as set two school records in prelims. Contested at Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C., the meet continues Friday with prelims slated for an 11 a.m. start time.
The Buckeyes kick started the meet with a bang, establishing an Ohio State record in prelims of the 200 freestyle relay event. Fueled by strong swims from freshman Zhesi Li, junior Annie Jongekrijg, freshman Macie McNichols and junior Rachael Dzierzak, Ohio State registered a time of 1:29.13 for 19th. The same crew set the previous school record (1:29.41) recently at the 2015 Big Ten Championships hosted on the campus of Ohio State University.
Senior standout Ashley Vance dropped three-tenths of a second off her own school record in prelims of the 200 individual medley. Her time of 1:56.16 tied with Annie Zhu of Georgia, which initiated a swim-off between the pair. Ultimately, Zhu out-touched Vance to qualify for the `A' Final. A native of Kingwood, Texas, Vance earned 16th overall, clocking in at 1:57.70 in the `B' Final.
Also competing in the evening session was Li, who qualified with a preliminary time of 22.12 in the 50 freestyle. A rookie from Shenyang, China, Li dropped a time of 22.62 in the `B' Final for 16th overall. She is also scheduled to compete individually in the 100 freestyle on Saturday.
In prelims of the 400 medley relay, Ohio State finished among the Top 20 in the nation. Touching in a time of 3:34.65, the Buckeye quartet of Li, Dzierzak, Aliena Schmidtke and Jongekrijg claimed 20th overall.
Sophomore Lindsey Clary represented the Buckeyes in the 500 freestyle, placing 51st with a time of 4:48.36.
Georgia stands atop the leaderboard following day one with 172 points. Ohio State garnered points in both the 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle. The Buckeyes rank 33rd with two points earned.
