After two days of competition at the 2013 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, the Ohio State Buckeyes are in fifth place with a score of 132 points. The Buckeyes competed in a total of five events Thursday evening in Minneapolis, Minn. Hosted at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, the meet will resume Friday with seven events scheduled.
Minnesota is the current leader with a score of 303.5. Indiana holds onto the runner-up spot with 211.5 points, while Penn State (175), Purdue (142.5), Ohio State (132), Wisconsin (116.5), Michigan (116), Nebraska (90), Northwestern (79), Iowa (58), Michigan State (34) and Illinois (32) follow.
Moving onto the 500 freestyle, junior Alex Norris earned a fourth-place finish in 4:41.30, a personal best. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, she entered the meet seeded fifth in the Big Ten Conference. Norris' classmate Kelly Ann Baird qualified for the B-Final in the event, placing 12th in 4:45.95.
Ohio State had its deepest showing of the night in the 200 individual medley with six competitors qualifying for the evening's finals. Of the finalists, the Scarlet and Gray held one spot in the A-Final, two in the B-Final and three in the C-final.
Senior Angela Severn led the way in the 200 individual medley by touching eighth in a time of 2:00.26. Severn earned her spot in the A-Final after becoming the first Buckeye this season to break the two-minute mark in the event during prelims (1:59.48). Fellow senior Emily Creran and sophomore Ashley Vance competed in the B-Final, finishing in 2:01.02 and 2:01.24, respectively. Vance also broke the two-minute mark in prelims, with a time of 1:59. 52.
In their first event at the Big Ten Championships, freshmen Annie Gillig and Annie Lazor qualified for the C-Final of the 200 individual medley. Gillig placed 19th in 2:00.91, while Lazor finished in 23rd in 2:02.06. Junior Kristyn Fulcher touched in 2:01.48 for a 22nd-place finish.
In the finals of the 50 freestyle, Ohio State notched four spots in the Top 24. Williams finished just outside the Top 10, with an 11th-place finish in 22.84, while a trio of Buckeyes - Detro, Schmidtke and Jongekrijg - competed in the C-Final for 21st, 22nd and 24th-place, respectively.
In diving, Cheyenne Cousineau made her first appearance of the meet in the 1-meter competition. Cousineau, the reining Big Ten champion on the platform dive, placed ninth with a final score of 317.90.
