Buckeyes won 12 of 18 swimming events at Northwestern Invite

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 21 Ohio State women’s swimming team had another strong day of racing to finish the Northwestern Invitational with a 3-0 record at the Norris Aquatic Center in Evanston, Ill. The Buckeyes defeated three Big Ten schools, including Northwestern (228.00-130.00), Nebraska (224.00-134.00) and Iowa (225.00-135.00).
Overall, Ohio State won 12 of the 18 swimming events at the two-day, three-session invitational.
The Buckeyes were dominant in the second session of competition, claiming wins in six of the seven events. The Scarlet and Gray began their momentum when the 200 medley relay team of Kelsey Moran, Angela Severn, Shannon Draves and Megan Detro placed first with a time of 1:41.97. The victory was the first of five-consecutive wins for Ohio State.
Emily Creran followed when she touched the wall first in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:21.68, while Alex Norris claimed the victory in the 200 freestyle at 1:50.31. Severn won the team’s fifth-consecutive win when she posted a time of 1:03.02 in the 100 breaststroke for first place.
Moran and Creran went second and third, respectively, in the 100 backstroke, while the 800 free relay team of Kelly Ann Baird, Katy Luchansky, Aliena Schmidtke and Norris cruised their way to first place with a time of 7:28.19. Overall, Ohio State notched 10 Top 3 finishes during the second session.
During the evening and final session at the Northwestern Invite, Ohio State won four out of the six events highlighted by a Top 3 sweep in the 200 backstroke led by Creran (2:01.01), Kristyn Fulcher (2:02.51) and Annie Gillig (2:02.70), respectively.
The trio of Buckeyes would set the tone for the rest of the night as Severn won the 200 breaststroke, while Draves followed with a win in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:02.14. Detro also was third overall in the 100 freestyle, racing her way to a time of 51.38.
The Scarlet and Gray wrapped up the evening with its 12th and final victory of the invite in the 400 freestyle relay. Michelle Williams, Detro, Phoebe Cater and Norris won the event with a time of 3:25.02.
Ohio State returns to the pool next weekend when the team hosts the OSU Winter Invitational Feb. 9-10 at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
