COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 15 Ohio State women's swimming and diving team went 2-0 to begin the second portion of the 2013 campaign, defeating Toledo, 189-104, Saturday afternoon at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes (6-1, 0-0 Big Ten) were guided by their senior class, which combined for nine individual wins and 15 Top 3 finishes.
"We talked before the meet about the seniors and the consistency and passion they have shown for the sport," head swimming coach Bill Dorenkott said. "They are tough and lead by example and they showed that today vs. Toledo. We were more consistent than we were yesterday. We are five weeks out from postseason competition and this was another step in that direction."
A pair of Buckeye upperclassmen then went first and second, respectively, in the 1000 freestyle. Senior Kelly Titus won the event with a personal-best time of 10:10.79, while junior Alex Norris was second at 10:14.19.
In diving, junior Cheyenne Cousineau earned her second win of the weekend after placing first in the three-meter springboard with 339.08 points. Sophomores Taylor Ford (307.35) and Kelly Carmendy (274.73) rounded out the results for the Scarlet and Gray. The trio then repeated the same results in the 1-meter springboard led by Cousineau with 299.18 total points.
In the 200 freestyle, junior Phoebe Cater claimed second place with season-best time of 1:50.96. After swimming the 1000 freestyle, Norris came right back to earn third place with a time of 1:51.16.
A trio of OSU seniors swept the Top 3 places in the 100 backstroke guided by senior Emily Creran, touching the wall in 56.56 followed right after by Moran in 56.62. Senior Lauren Massey finished third with a time of 57.24.
In the 100 breaststroke, Ohio State continued to lead the charge, taking the Top 3 spots in back-to-back events. Severn won the event with a time of 1:04.25, while freshman Rachael Dzierzak claimed second place with a season-best time of 1:05.28.
Draves followed with a victory in one her favorite events of the afternoon - the 200 butterfly. She touched the wall in a time of 2:01.54. Detro continued the winning theme for the senior class, earning first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.40.
After the first break of action, Ohio State led the Rockets, 96-35. The Scarlet and Gray didn't miss a beat after the 15-minute break as Detro won her second-consecutive event in the 100 freestyle with a strong time of 51.01.
Creran swept the backstroke events when she cruised her way to a first-place finish in the 200-yard event with a time of 2:02.05. Massey picked up her second Top 3 performance of the afternoon with a time of 2:03.22.
In the 200 breaststroke, Ohio State continued to pick up the points, collecting the Top 3 places led by freshman Annie Lazor, who won the event with a time of 2:19.83. Severn and Dzierzak went second and third, respectively.
In the 500 freestyle, Norris capped off a strong day of freestyle performances with a first-place finish in a time of 4:56.40. Titus was second overall with a time of 4:59.63.
Draves won her second event vs. the Rockets in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.72. Draves was one of four seniors who claimed at least two wins vs. Toledo. The last individual event of the day - the 400 individual medley - was won by Severn with a time of 4:23:55.
Ohio State concluded a strong performance with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay when Norris, Cater, Draves and Detro picked up the win with a time of 3:28.55.
Ohio State will next travel to Ann Arbor to face Michigan Jan. 18 at Donald B. Canham Natatorium.
