COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State softball team released its 2013 schedule Tuesday, which includes 14 home games at Buckeye Field. The Buckeyes take on nine NCAA tournament teams highlighted by two games against super regional finalist Georgia and one contest vs. LSU, a 2012 Women's College World Series squad.
"In just a little over two months, we will open up the 2013 campaign," first-year head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly said. "With challenges from all over the country, our preseason will put this team to the test early. In order to get ready for the Big Ten and beyond, we will play 15 games against teams that were in the NCAA tournament last season. We look forward to the challenge."
Ohio State opens the 2013 tournament schedule with five games at the University of Georgia, Feb. 8-10, in Athens. The Buckeyes face Elon before taking on the Bulldogs Feb. 8. The team will play Georgia again the following day, while also facing Winthrop in two games Feb. 9-10.
The Buckeyes will be back in action the following weekend at the Jacksonville University Tournament Feb. 15-17. The tournament will feature games against Bethune Cookman, Jacksonville, Louisville and Stony Brook.
The Scarlet and Gray will then make its annual west coast trip at the Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., Feb. 22-24. The Buckeyes will open the tournament with two touch matchups against LSU and Arizona Feb. 22. The team will then play Cal Poly and San Diego State Feb. 23 before finishing the weekend with a morning game against Utah Feb. 24.
During spring break, Ohio State will then travel to the east coast for a tournament at the University of Maryland March 9-10 with games against the Terrapins, Radford, Iowa and St. John's. The team will stay on the road for a contest at Georgia Washington March 13 and at Towson March 14.
The Buckeyes will then wrap up the tournament schedule at George Mason University March 15-17 with games against Pitt, George Mason and Canisius.
The team's home slate opens March 22-24 against Indiana at Buckeye Field. Following their first three home games, the Buckeyes will hit the road for eight-consecutive contests, traveling to Purdue March 29-31 before facing reigning Big Ten regular season champion Michigan April 5-7 in Ann Arbor, Mich. Ohio State will then play two games at Ohio in a doubleheader April 9.
Ohio State hosts Penn State in its second home conference series April 12-14 before welcoming Ball State in a single midweek game April 17. Following its contest vs. the Cardinals, the Scarlet and Gray will travel to Madison to face Wisconsin April 19-21.
The Buckeyes close the home schedule with seven-consecutive games at Buckeye Field highlighted by conference series vs. Michigan State April 24 and Minnesota April 26-28. The team concludes the home slate vs. Wright State May 1 with a doubleheader. Ohio State will then round out the regular season at Illinois May 3-5.
The Big Ten Tournament returns to the schedule for the first time since 2008, with second-year member Nebraska hosting the event May 9-12.
Ohio State returns 17 letterwinners from the 2012 squad that went 31-23 overall.
