Ohio State Defeats Ohio, 11-2, in Five Innings

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team defeated Ohio University, 11-2, in five innings Sunday afternoon in their third and final game of the 2013 Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic at Buckeye Field.
The Buckeyes were on the board early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. With freshman Anna Kirk on second and junior Taylor Watkins on third, freshman Rebecca Lee hit a fly ball to right field to score Watkins. Following Lee, senior Leesa Gresham hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to bring the score to 3-0.
The Bobcats responded in the top of the second, plating a run on a single to left field from Adrienne Gebele that brought Alexandria Basquez home. Basquez had reached third on a single to shortstop followed by singles to left field and shortstop by Dakota Pyles and Raven King, respectively.
After the Buckeyes took the 4-1 lead in the second inning, Ohio State opened the game with a six-run third inning.
Senior Evelyn Carrillo started the bottom of the third for the Buckeyes with a single to right field. Following Carrillo, Lee hit a home run over the left field wall to bring the score to 6-1.
With Prantl on third base and redshirt sophomore Erika Leonard on first, Rennie double to left field to score Prantl and advance Leonard to third. Junior Caitlin Conrad then walked to load the bases, followed by another walk from Watkins to score Leonard. With the bases still loaded, Kirk hit a double to left field to plate two more runs for the Buckeyes and bring the score to 10-1.
The Bobcats earned their second run in the top of the fourth after loading the bases on walks from Chelsea Hortman and Alexandria Basquez and a single to center field from Pyles. With two outs, Kristen Searcy singled to left field to score Hortman.
The Buckeyes plated their final run in the bottom of the fourth after Gresham singled to left field, senior Melaina Saalfeld singled to left field and Leonard singled to center field to load the bases. Rennie then walked to score Gresham and bring the score to 11-2.
Redshirt senior Melanie Nichols claimed the win for the Buckeyes after allowing two runs on six hits and five strikeouts.
