Every Friday, OhioStateBuckeyes.com features one of the many Ohio State social media outlets to follow. The Ohio State softball team hosts the 12th annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic this weekend and is today's #FF: OhioState_SB
The event, held at Fred Beekman Park on the Ohio State campus, has grown into one of the biggest fundraisers for Breast Cancer Awareness in Central Ohio, raising more than $161,000 in the past 11 years.
The Buckeyes are led by first-year head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly, who said she is excited to see the team compete at a highl level this weekend.
"We are excited to host the Charity Classic," Schoenly said. "For teams in the state of Ohio, it is a long standing tradition, raising funds and awareness for a great cause, in the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.
"The team is fired up and ready to to play this weekend. We have had three weeks of tough practice, trying out some combinations and working on skills. But this weekend, all we are focusing on is competing. I want to see fierce players, grittiness, and clutch plays. It should be a great weekend of softball."
A total of 14 teams will compete in the event, which benefits the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. The teams participating in the event this year include: Ohio State, Wright State, Ohio, Ohio Dominican, Akron, Dayton, Ashland, Denison, Toledo, Capital, Mount Union, Rio Grande, Ursuline and Kenyon. Fred Beekman Park is an eight-field complex located west of State Route 315 at Lane Avenue.
