Athletics Communications intern Maddy Humphrey is venturing around campus this summer, checking in on some of her Bucks Go Pro peers and sharing their internship story. This edition focuses on softball player and Fan Experience & Promotions intern, Taylor White.
Taylor White is a rising senior from Los Angeles, California and is spending her summer interning with Fan Experience & Promotions for the Ohio State University Athletics Department.
Ohio State’s Fan Experience & Promotions Department serves as the behind-the-scenes coordinators for all the excitement and fun that fans are able to experience at Ohio State athletics events, including football gamedays. Fan Experience & Promotions is located at the Fawcett Event Center, one of the main hubs for the Athletics Department. Fan Experience & Promotions provides multiple gameday upgrade options for fans attending an Ohio State football game, and some include: pre-game field access pass, pre-game tunnel experience, spirit squad anthem buddies, locker room tour, and post-game field access with Carmen Ohio. Fan Experience & Promotions team members take much pride in seeing Ohio State Buckeye fans having the opportunity to go to one of their events or experiences, and seeing them smile with pure happiness.
White is getting close to wrapping up her summer interning with Fan Experience & Promotions, and she has enjoyed the experience while also learning a lot about her future careers. Her days on the job usually vary, but the majority of her time is sitting in meetings with coaches, football operations, supervisor meetings and many other departments throughout campus. Outside of the meeting room, White works on assignments at her desk on team season recaps, running the numbers on game attendance, what brings fans to the game, what kind of giveaways fans would like to see, a softball team season recap and what Fan Experience & Promotions can do to help better the game experience from a student-athlete perspective. The environment at the Fan Experience & Promotions office is a major part of the reason why White has thoroughly enjoyed working at this particular location. White expands, “I have enjoyed how creative and interactive the office is. It is always refreshing to know that your day is not going to be the same as the next. Also, where I work is in a big open area where I chat with other people on my floor and throw ideas around.”
One day this summer, White got the opportunity to tangle with the big and powerful American Flag that is presented at home football games in the Ohio Stadium, and the mighty Redcoats that usher all Ohio State sporting events. This was White’s most exciting experience while working with Fan Experience & Promotions and she describes the event, “We had to fold and move the giant American flag that stretches across the football field, so we took a little field trip to the area to where the flag was being held. I jumped in to help and participate with folding and moving the flag. The only issue was that the Redcoats, all trying to direct everyone in a different direction. The most fun part of it all was a veteran shouted out ‘everyone move west!’ and at that moment I just thought to myself, who has a compass? The Redcoats were attempting to run underneath the flag and hit it up so that it would not hit the floor, and then felt the need to shout out ‘I can’t see anything’. Needless to say it was an eventful day, but we got the flag folded and shipped off.”
Ethan Rowley is White’s supervisor for the Bucks Go Pro internship program. Rowley is an Assistant Director for Fan Experience & Promotions. White expressed how she has learned many beneficial ideas, received a lot of professional advice from Rowley and has had an amazing time working for Rowley this summer. “One of the biggest things I have learned from my Ethan and working in an office setting is that there is always a correlation back to the ideals in sport. He taught me that everything is not always going to go your way, but to stay competitive, and if you want something keep pushing it until you receive the results and the outcomes that you wanted.”
White began her Buckeye career chosen as the team’s Rookie of the Year in 2015, while starting in 27 games playing both left field and catcher. In 2016 during her sophomore year, White made her ESPN SportCenter’s Top Ten Plays debut for making a diving catch against 'That Team Up North.' She also hit six homeruns out of the park and finished with a team-high 15 stolen bases in her sophomore season. In the recent 2017 season, White finished with a .324 batting average, and with an outstanding .703 slugging percentage in the 23 Big Ten games. Throughout the year, White knocked out two grand slams, one against No. 22 Illinois and the other against Maryland. So far in White’s career she has earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week in 2015 and Second Team All-Big Ten in 2016 and 2017. Luckily for the Buckeyes, White will be returning next season for her senior year campaign.
Interning with Bucks Go Pro and Fan Experience & Promotions has been an unforgettable experience for White. White concludes on what she hopes to take away from this summer’s internship to the softball team for their next year. “Something I am hoping to bring back to my team is stressing the fact that there are so many more resources on campus for us student-athletes to use, and sometimes we don’t know or we overlook them. Another piece of advice I want to stress to the freshmen is that everyone at Ohio State really wants you to succeed and if you need help with anything, and I mean anything, someone here is going to help or send you to the right person that can help.”
The lessons we have learned here will carry over in White’s athletic, academic and professional careers.
