Prantl, Carrillo Claim Big Ten Honors

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State freshman outfielder Cammi Prantl was named a second team All-Big Ten honoree, while junior first baseman Evelyn Carrillo was selected to the Big Ten All-Defensive team, the league office announced Wednesday. Prantl and Carrillo earn their first career Big Ten honors and are joined by junior catcher Melissa Rennie, who was named the 2013 Ohio State Sportsmanship honoree.
Prantl, native of Ashville, Ohio, earns her first career All-Big Ten selection. Through 54 games, Prantl leads the Buckeyes in batting average (.355) and hits (65). Her team-best 65 hits are fifth-best in the Big Ten in 2013. Prantl, who was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week March 18, also has compiled 12 doubles, one triple, one home run, 31 RBI and nine stolen bases this year. She has guided the Buckeyes with 20 multi-hit performances with a .448 slugging percentage, which is third-best on the team. In Big Ten play, Prantl has notched a team-best .325 average as well as 26 hits and 14 RBI.
Carrillo, a native of Corona, Calif., has posted a .991 fielding percentage with 312 putouts at first base this season, while only committing three errors in 320 chances. At the plate, the OSU first baseman has collected 30 RBI in three-consecutive seasons, while posting a season-high 56 hits, 13 doubles and 15 runs scored. Carrillo is the active career leader for the Buckeyes in hits (148), home runs (15) and RBI (115).
Rennie, a native of Wellington, Ohio, claims her first career Big Ten sportsmanship award. A 2012 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, Rennie has 104 career starts behind the plate in three seasons. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes also must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
The Buckeyes are set to begin action at the 2013 Big Ten Softball Tournament in the opening round against Iowa at 3 p.m. ET Thursday in Lincoln, Neb.
