COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the first time under first-year head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly, the Ohio State softball team played at its home facility, Buckeye Field, and defeated Ohio Dominican, 5-2, in a nine-inning exhibition contest Friday night. Tied 2-2, in the bottom of the seventh, the Buckeyes posted three runs with two outs to help claim the victory.
Junior starting pitcher Kasie Kelly was outstanding in the circle for the Scarlet and Gray, throwing seven innings, allowing no earned runs, while limiting the Panther bats to three hits. Kelly was perfect through 6.1 innings pitched and also struck out six ODU batters.
Offensively, Ohio State was led by sophomore Taylor Watkins, who posted the go-ahead, two-run double in the bottom half of the seventh. Junior Evelyn Carrillo was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while sophomore Maddy McIntyre was 2-for-4 with an RBI single.
After the first five innings went scoreless, the Buckeyes took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh. McIntyre plated pinch runner Jesse Machovina for the first run with a single, while junior Melissa Rennie scored on a first-and-third situation following an error by the ODU defense.
The Panthers rebounded to tie the game, 2-2, in the top of the seventh on a two-run single down the right field line. Both runs were unearned.
However, the Buckeyes rallied to take the eventual 5-2 win after crossing the plate three times in the bottom half of the seventh. After senior Brittany Mills singled and sophomore Caitlin Conrad was hit by a pitch, the scene was set for Watkins, who came through in the clutch with a two-out, two-run double down the right field line. Carrillo followed with a single to score Watkins for the fifth run.
Sophomore pitcher Alex DiDomenico pitched the final two innings for the Buckeyes, allowing no runs, while limiting the ODU bats to one hit.
The Buckeyes are back in action with an exhibition doubleheader against Kent State at Noon Sunday at Buckeye Field.
