COLUMBUS, Ohio – Impressive pitching and a scorching offense propelled Ohio State to a five-inning 10-0 win over Miami (OH) on opening day of the 17th annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic at Buckeye Field.
The Buckeyes broke the game open in the bottom of the second with five runs on six hits and one error. Emily Clark had a leadoff double and Ashley Goodwin followed up with a walk to set the stage for Kallie Boren, who belted a RBI double to left field. Megan Choinacky and Bailee Sturgeon punched singles to the left to plate two more.
The hits kept coming as Megan McMenemy singled to center field to load the bases with one out. Next up, Niki Carver tallied a RBI with a single. On the same play, a throwing error by the right fielder allowed Choinacky to come in for a 5-0 lead.
Not satisfied, the OSU offense put up another five-spot in the home frame of the third. A Goodwin single and Claire Nicholson walk put runners on the corners. Choinacky reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second for runners in scoring position. Sturgeon got on thanks to an error by the shortstop, which gave pinch runner Taylor White enough time to scamper home.
McMenemy stepped into the box and hit a single to the second baseman for a tally. Not to be outdone, Carver lifted a double to left center field to tack on two more runs. Amy Balich came in as a pinch hitter and had a RBI single to score the final run of the game.
In the circle, Shelby McCombs allowed two hits and notched six strikeouts in four innings of standout work. Morgan Ray tossed one inning of relief for one hit and a strikeout. Carver paced the offense with three RBI, going 2-for-3 and adding a run.
