COLUMBUS, Ohio – Katya Duvall struck out nine batters to help push Team Gray to a 2-1 victory over Team Scarlet on Friday night on the eve of the 17th annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic.
Duvall pitched a complete game three-hitter with one run for the win. MJ James was charged with the loss for Team Scarlet after she tossed 2.2 innings for three hits, two runs and a strikeout. Skylar Hayward worked 3.1 innings of relief. She did not allow a hit and fanned three.
Both teams had early momentum on their side to start the game. Emily Clark walked to get on and a double to left field by Kallie Boren brought her in for a 1-0 Team Scarlet lead. The advantage did not last long as Ashley Goodwin responded in the bottom of the first with a RBI single up the middle to tie the score.
In the third, Lilli Piper’s second walk of the evening and Goodwin’s single put a pair on with two outs for Team Gray. Alex Vargas stepped up and drove the ball to center field to plate a run and take a 2-1 edge.
Team Gray had a chance to tack on a tally with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth but Hayward worked her way out of the jam with a strikeout to strand the trio.
In the visitor frame of the seventh, Team Scarlet had a runner in scoring positon thanks to a walk by Shelby McCombs and single for Bri Betschel. Unfortunately it was not enough as a pop up ended the game in favor of Team Gray.
Goodwin had two hits and a RBI while Piper tallied two runs and Vargas had a hit and RBI for Team Gray. Amy Balich, Betschel and Boren notched one hit apiece for Team Scarlet.
