COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State softball team claimed its first series win of the season after defeating Indiana, 7-3, in game three Sunday at Buckeye Field. With the victory, the Buckeyes improve to 16-11 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play.
"Our goal is to win every series and I thought Indiana played us really hard this weekend," head coach Linda Kalafatissaid. "They took an early lead in this game and we continued to battle at the plate. I thought some of our kids stepped up and did some great things for us today."
With the score tied 3-3, the Buckeyes posted four runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning en route to the win against Indiana (16-15, 1- 2 Big Ten). Freshman Caitlin Conradstarted the OSU momentum when she sent a deep fly ball over the right center wall to make it 4-3 for her second long ball of the year. She finished the day at the plate going 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore Evelyn Carillo then extended the lead to 6-3 when she crushed a two-out single up the middle to score two Buckeyes. Carrillo went 2-for-3 with two RBI vs. the Hoosiers. Senior Katie Simontonthen pinched run in a first-and-third situation and recorded the Buckeyes' seventh run of the game when she stole home.
In addition, freshman Taylor Watkins went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Senior captain Alicia Herronwas 0-for-1 at the plate, but reached base safely for the 22nd-consecutive game following two hit-by-pitches and an intentional walk.
In the circle, senior pitcher Mikayla Endicottimproved to 10-7 overall, throwing seven innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.
Ohio State had an early opportunity to take an early lead in the bottom of the first with the bases loaded, but a double play ending the OSU chance when Carrillo hit it a line shot right at the second baseman, who quickly tossed it to first for the third out with the runner breaking on the play.
The Hoosiers struck first in the top of the third after a sacrifice fly by Shannon Cawley, scoring Kelsey Brannon from third base. Cassie Gogreve continued the rally when she doubled down the left field line to plate Brianna Meyer and make the score, 2-0.
However, the Buckeyes battled back to cut their deficit to 2-1 in the bottom half following a two-out RBI double by LeBeau on a 1-0 pitch vs. starting pitcher Lora Olson. With the bases loaded, Indiana then made a pitching change with Megan Murphy replacing Olson in the circle.
Ohio State claimed its first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the fourth when Watkins blasted a two-run single to left center, scoring junior captain Megan Colettaand Conrad to make it 3-2 in favor of the Buckeyes. Both Coletta and Conrad notched doubles to begin the OSU rally.
The Hoosiers rebounded in the sixth when Amanda Wagner posted a lead-off home run over the right field wall to even the score.
Overall, Ohio State and Indiana collected nine hits each.
The Buckeyes continue their home schedule at 5 p.m. Wednesday with a doubleheader against Wright State.
