Columbus, Ohio - Ohio State freshman defender Melissa Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Colerain) was named to the 2003 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Great Lakes All-Region first team Thursday. Joining Miller on the all-region squad was sophomore forward Colleen Hoban (Strongsville, Ohio/ Walsh Jesuit), who earned a spot on the Great Lakes All-Region second team.

Miller, who earned All-Big Ten honors, combined with co-captain Erica Nollen (West Chester, Ohio/ Lakota East) to spearhead the Ohio State backline in the 2003 season. Miller helped to lead a record-setting Buckeye defensive unit as OSU established an all-time team mark in goals against average and number of goals allowed in one season. Miller, who also contributed on the offensive end with six points on two goals and a pair of assists in 2003, led a defense that allowed just 17 goals in 21 matches, which calculated to a 0.77 goals against average this season. The two marks shattered the previous Ohio State all-time record of 24 goals allowed in the 1996 and 1998 seasons and bested the 0.86 GAA mark set in 1998.

Hoban led the Buckeye offense, posting a team-best 24 points on 10 goals and four assists as she helped Ohio State notch the best record in the program's 10-year history at 13-5-3. Hoban had her first two-goal match of her career against Bowling Green and led Ohio State with four game-winning goals, including the match-winner in the 1-0 triumph over then-No. 6 Virginia Sept. 5. In just two seasons Hoban has moved into the Ohio State Top 10 in scoring with 17 goals and 40 career points, while her 24 points this season moved her into a three-way tie for third-best all-time in OSU history. The 10 goals also accounts for a third-place tie with four Buckeyes, including teammate Lisa Grubb (Potage, Mich./ Portage Central), for most goals in a single season.
