1999 Season Review

%^$The Buckeyes finished the regular season with an overall record of 12-6-2 and 5-4-1 in the Big Ten conference.%^$

%^$"We had an excellent season this year," head coach Lori Walker said. "We were more consistent with our performance than past years."%^$

%^$The performance of rookie Lindsay Eckles was pivotal for the team. In 17 games, Eckles amassed 71 shots, nine goals and two assists for a total of 20 points. Eckles also tallied six game-winning goals. %^$

%^$Sophomore Emily Thorpe was another key player for the Buckeyes. One of the fastest players on the Buckeye roster, Thorpe stepped up in the midfield and tied for second place in team scoring with 16 points (6 goals, 4 assists).%^$

%^$In her last regular season appearance against West Virginia, Katy Traeger notched a hat trick and doubled her season goals to tie for second place on the team in scoring. Traeger has etched her name into the OSU record book for career points (45), career shots (120) and career goals (16). %^$

%^$"Katy is a very composed, solid player," said Walker. "She is always consistent in her play." %^$

%^$Senior Katie Martorella finished the season with four goals and one assist, equaling 9 points. %^$

%^$"Katie reads the game so well an has incredible dedication," Walker said. "Her leadership was critical to the team's success." Martorella also gained record status as she amassed 121 career shots and 48 shots for the 1999 season.%^$

%^$Goalkeeper Amber Barnes had an impressive season as she led the Big Ten for nine weeks in shutouts (8). Barnes ended the season with a 74 saves, a goals against average (GAA) of 1.27. She also leads the OSU record books in career saves, career shutouts and career GAA. %^$

%^$Ohio State vs. Minnesota
%^$The fifth-seeded Ohio State women's soccer team lost to No 4-seed Minnesota, 2-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Women's Soccer Tournament Nov. 5, at Bloomington, Ind. %^$

%^$Minnesota attacked at 29:32 when Megan Johnson put the ball into the back of the net on a Nicole Lee shot that bounced off the goal. Early in the second half, Lee gave the Gophers their second goal of the game with assists from Keely Dinse and Dana Larson. %^$

%^$The 1999 Big Ten Tournament
%^$The Michigan women's soccer team captured its second Big Ten Conference Tournament title in three years with a 4-2 win over Penn State on Sunday Nov. 7 at Indiana's Armstrong Stadium. The Wolverines got two goals apiece from Abby Crumpton and Kacy Beitel as the Wolverines built a 4-0 lead early in the second half before holding off a late Penn State charge for the 4-2 win. %^$
