Women's Soccer Falls, 2-0, To Penn State In Big Ten Semifinal
Nov. 9, 2001
COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State women's soccer team, seeded fourth in the Big Ten tournament, fell to No. 1 seed Penn State, 2-0, Friday on Purdue's East Field. A day after the team helped head coach Lori Walker win the 50th match of her tenure at Ohio State, the Nittany Lions (16-3-1, 8-1-1 Big Ten) avenged their 2-1 loss to the Buckeyes of two weeks earlier by outshooting OSU, 22-7. The Buckeyes (10-9-1, 5-4-1 Big Ten) now await word if they have secured an at-large bid into their first NCAA tournament.
"Penn State has a very good team, a very solid team" Walker said. "They are much more experienced in postseaon play. We came out and battled today but they were the better team."
PSU applied pressure to the OSU defense early with seven shots in the first half. Stephanie Pezzullo, who scored the Nittany Lions' lone goal at OSU Oct. 26, scored on a ball that hit the cross bar and trickled in for the 1-0 lead. Big Ten Player of the Year Christie Welsh and Heidi Drummond collected assists on the goal from 15 yards away.
PSU came out in the second and added an insurance goal 1:12 into the period. Stephanie Smith chipped the ball over Buckeye goalkeeper Jen Heaney (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) to pad the Nittany Lions' lead. Welsh collected her second assist of the match on Smith's tally. Heaney finished the match with seven saves while her counterpart Emily Oleksiuk collected five.
Offensively, Liz Mumley (Fr., Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) led the team with three shots, all on goal, and Emily Thorpe (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) and Big Ten Freshman of the Year Lisa Grubb (Fr., Portage, Mich./Portage Central) each added a shot on goal.
The 2001 NCAA Women's Soccer Selection Show will air live via satellite at 3 p.m. (EST) Monday, Nov. 12 on Fox Sports Net South, Fox Sports Net Northwest, Fox Sports Net Midwest, Empire Sports and Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh.
