COLUMBUS, Ohio- The No. 4 seed Ohio State women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the 2001 Big Ten Tournament with a 2-1 defeat of No. 5 seed and tournament host Purdue (10-5-3, 4-3-3 Big Ten) in overtime Thursday at the West Field in West Lafayette, Ind. The Buckeyes (10-8-1, 5-4-1 Big Ten) came back late in the match and secured the win only 2:12 into the extra session.
The Boilermakers struck first in the match when Kim Comisar netted an unassisted goal in the 57th minute. She gathered a loose ball and put a shot past OSU goalkeeper Jen Heaney (Fr, Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) for the 1-0 lead. Heaney finished the match with four saves for her ninth win on the year.
With less than five minutes showing on the clock, OSU pushed to find the back of the net and was successful when Lisa Grubb (Fr., Portage, Mich./Portage Central) added to her team-high point total with a goal at 86:53. Grubb's 25 points this year is four behind the freshman record set in 1994 when Lisa Suttmiller recorded 29 (11G, 7A). Jen Miller (Jr., Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) assisted on the game-tying tally that sent the match to extra time and gave the Buckeyes the momentum.
Less than three minutes into the overtime period, Grubb found Sarah Lanham (Jr., Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) and Lanham put the ball past PU goalkeeper Elizabeth Boldt for the gamewinner. Boldt recorded six saves, all coming in the second half when OSU outshot the Boilermakers, 8-4. For the match, the Buckeyes outshot PU, 12-9, but were held to three corner kicks compared to 11 for the hosts.
The Buckeyes move on to play No. 1 seed, and No. 8 nationally, Penn State at 1 p.m. (EST) Friday on the East Field in the first semifinal. The Nittany Lions defeated No. 8 seed Northwestern, 3-0, in the first match of the tournament.
