Buckeyes Upset Badgers In Big Ten Tournament
November 6, 1998
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Freshman forward Courtney Nein (Middletown, Ohio) netted her first career goal as seventh-seeded Ohio State upset No. 2 Wisconsin, 1-0 Friday afternoon in a chilly (windy, 30 degrees) first round match at Penn State's Jeffrey Field. The Buckeyes have shutout six of their last eight opponents and move to 12-7-1 for the season (6-1-1 for eight matches).
The Buckeyes and Badgers battled for 73 scoreless minutes before Katie Martorella (Jr., Englewood, Colo.) served a perfect ball to the right side of the goal that Nein headed home for the game-winner.
Amber Barnes (So., Fairfield, Ohio) picked up six saves and her ninth shutout of the season, adding to her school record and is now second for career blankings with 12.5.
The Badgers dominated the first half of play, striking eight shots to the Buckeyes' two with Barnes smothering every attempt. OSU turned the tables in the second period, running the Badgers ragged. Martorella ripped a pair of shots that were just barely saved by Wisconsin keeper Briget Schwarting.
The win marks the first postseason victory ever for the Buckeyes who were 0-4 in the conference tournament heading into this weekend.
OSU will play Indiana in the semifinals, Saturday at 3 p.m. The Hoosiers advanced with a 5-4 penalty kick victory over Minnesota.
