W Soccer: Three of the Team's Scholar-Athletes Honored
COLUMBUS, Ohio Three OSU Scholar-Athletes from the soccer team, sophomore defender/midfielder Lauren Beachy, junior midfielder Ashley Bowyer and sophomore midfielder Courtney Jenkins, have been named to the CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 4 Women's Soccer Team.
The three were each chosen to the District’s third team. In order to be nominated, the student-athlete must have a minimum GPA of 3.30 and be a starter or major reserve player. The nominees are then voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Beachy is from Loveland, Ohio and is majoring in human resources. Both Bowyer, from Aliso Viejo, Calif., and Jenkins, from Dublin, Ohio, are health sciences majors who plan on becoming physical therapists.
The trio is outstanding in the classroom and also on the field. Friday all three played critical roles in the Buckeyes’ 1-0 win over No. 21 Penn State in State College, Pa. Jenkins and Bowyer each assisted on Lisa Collison’s game-winning, first-half goal, and Beachy spent the entire game marking Penn State’s dangerous Danielle Toney, who leads the team in assists.
Bowyer has started all 19 games this season, she leads the team with seven assists and she has a string of 61 consecutive starting assignments for Ohio State. Beachy has 18 starts and four assists this year. Jenkins has 17 starts with a goal and an assist. Career-wise, Beachy has 41 starts and Jenkins has 37.
Speaking of the No. 61: Ohio State’s win Friday snapped a streak of 61 Big Ten games at Jeffrey Field without a loss for Penn State, dating to 1995. Penn State was 59-0-2 vs. the conference in regular season games since 1995 and 65-0-2 when Big Ten tournament games at Jeffrey Field are added to the mix. Way to go, Bucks!
