Oct. 30, 2002
Columbus, Ohio -
The Ohio State women's soccer team (7-9-1, 4-5-1) out shot Kent State (6-10-2, 3-6-1) 27-1 on its way to a 3-0 shutout victory on senior night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. OSU started all seven of its seniors as the squad held Kent State to zero shot attempts until deep into the second half of play.
The OSU veterans served its youth in the first half as seniors Lindsay Eckles (Hilliard, Ohio), Jen Miller (Centerville, Ohio) and Sarah Lanham (Middletown, Ohio) each registered assists on goals by freshman forwards Danielle Dietrich (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Colleen Hoban (Strongsville, Ohio).
Hoban netted the first score in the 15th minute accepting a pass across the six-yard box from Eckles and blasting a shot from 10 yards out and into the Golden Flash net for the early 1-0 advantage. The goal, Hoban's sixth on the year, ties her for the team lead with fellow forward Lisa Grubb (So., Portage, Mich.), while the assist is Eckles third of the season.
The Buckeyes would strike again in the 32nd minute as Lanham and Miller combined to feed Dietrich inside the six-yard box. Dietrich responded by chest bumping a shot into the top-center of the Kent goal for her second tally of the season. Lanham initiated the scoring play as she kicked the ball out to Miller on the left side of the 18-yard box, Miller then centered the ball into Dietrich for the goal from just under five yards out. Miller recorded her team-leading fifth assist of the season, while Lanham notched her second.
Ohio State carried the 2-0 lead into the intermission as the Buckeyes out shot Kent 17-0 in the first stanza. In fact, the Golden Flashes would not record their first shot attempt of the night until the 89th minute of play.
In the second half, OSU midfielder Heather Miller (So., Centerville, Ohio) connected with fellow midfielder Liz Mumley (So., Woodbridge, Va.) for an insurance goal at the 79:08 mark of play. Miller advanced the ball into the Golden Flash zone and fed Mumley who fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard box and into the left side of the Kent net for the final 3-0 count.
Ohio State's suffocating defense, led by the both Jen and Heather Miller, seniors Becky Broering (Westerville, Ohio), Shelley Besson (Centerville, Ohio), Kiley Enmark (Sterling Heights, Mich.), and sophomores Paige Harrison (Centerville, Ohio) and Emily Gilbert (Cincinnati, Ohio), held KSU to zero shots on goal for the match, as senior goal keeper Anna Mitchell (Canton, Ohio) recorded her second win of the season and first since OSU's Sept. 8 victory over Georgetown.
Buckeye head coach Lori Walker was delighted to see her seniors honored with a victory.
"I am very pleased on how the seniors came out and played tonight," Walker, who recorded her 70th career victory with the win, said. "They have done a tremendous job this season to display leadership in difficult times and I think tonight we came together as a team."
The Buckeyes conclude regular season play on Saturday (Nov. 2) versus the Cincinnati Bearcats. The match is set to kick off at noon.
