COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Big Ten Conference today announced it has named Lisa Grubb (Fr., Portage, Mich./Portage Central) the offensive player of the week for women's soccer. It is the second time Grubb has earned player of the week accolades and the fourth time the Buckeyes have been so honored this season.
"We're very pleased Lisa has been honored for the second time," Lori Walker, OSU head coach, said. "Her contributions over the weekend were consistently dangerous for opposing defenses and her creativity in the attack makes her play unpredictable. Lisa's enthusiasm was a big boost to our team's confidence over the weekend."
Grubb was instrumental in the Buckeyes' 2-1 home victory over No. 4 Penn State Oct. 26 (snapping the Nittany Lions' 29-match conference unbeaten streak) and Ohio State's 4-3 win over visiting Evansville Oct. 28. Against Penn State, the freshman midfielder tallied the first goal of the match in the seventh minute. She took a pass from Emily Thorpe and dribbled past a Lion defender to get a look at the empty net after a misplay by Emily Oleksiuk. Grubb then assisted in Liz Mumley's gamewinner in the 10th minute, collecting a loose ball and sending it to Mumley on the right wing. Grubb had six shots, two on goal, in 80 minutes of play.
Sunday against Evansville, Grubb tallied the gamewinner and added an assist. She assisted in Lindsay Eckles' goal at the 26:20 mark off a give-and-go, tying the match at one going into halftime. The second half saw both teams tally twice. The gamewinner-Grubb's ninth goal of the season and third gamewinner-came at 78:41 off a through pass from Thorpe. Grubb leads the team with nine goals and four assists for 22 points and has taken 29 shots on goal.
Ohio State (9-7-1 overall, 5-4-1 in the Big Ten) closes out the regular season at 7 p.m. Friday when it plays host to No. 1 North Carolina at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Tickets are available at the gate, by phone at 1-800-GO-BUCKS or 292-2624 or online at www.hangonsloopy.com.
