COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State women's soccer team scored two goals in the first 10 minutes of play and held on to the lead through numerous distractions to upset No. 4 Penn State at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Friday. The Buckeyes improve to 8-7-1 overall and finished in fourth place in the Big Ten with a 5-4-1 record. The win snapped the Big Ten champion Nittany Lions' unbeaten streak at 29-consecutive matches dating back to the 1999 season. PSU slipped to 13-3-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the conference.

"What a game," Lori Walker, OSU head coach, said. "Penn State is a very good team and we played very well tonight. It was a phenomenal effort by the entire team. We just put together a lot of things we've been working on and it happened at all the right times."

The Buckeyes came out flying high and scored quickly. Emily Thorpe (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) brought the ball down the left wing and found a cutting Lisa Grubb (Fr., Portage, Mich./Portage Central) open in the center of the box. Grubb turned to the net, dribbled past a defender and PSU goalkeeper Emily Oleksiuk to put the ball in the empty net for the 1-0 lead at 6:20. OSU was not done though. In the 10th minute, Grubb collected a loose ball and carried it down the left side of the pitch. She then passed to a wide open Liz Mumley (Fr., Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) on the right wing. Mumley beat Oleksiuk to the goalkeeper's right side and netted her first career goal as a Buckeye.

Then came the distractions. With 12:20 remaining on the clock in the first, the power to the stadium lights went out, causing a 29-minute delay. The two teams battled to the half with no more scoring. In the second half, both teams fought to control the ball. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Stephanie Pezzullo brought the Nittany Lions back into the match with a perfectly struck ball into the top left corner of the net. The shot came from 18-yards out and went just past the hands of OSU goalkeeper Jen Heaney (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) to bring the score to 2-1. With 17:56 remaining in the match, the lights went out again, this time for 20 minutes.

After the second restart, PSU applied the pressure with 12 total shots in the half and two on goal. Heaney, who totaled five saves, and the Buckeye defense stopped the Nittany Lions from advancing, controlling the ball, and the clock, to secure the win.

Tempers flared at the end of play with Oleksiuk, who recorded one save, and head coach Paula Wilkins each picking up red cards after time had expired. Oleksiuk was carded for striking and Wilkins for language.

With the win, OSU earned the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten tournament, Nov. 8-11 at West Lafayette, Ind. PSU is the No. 1 seed and is followed by No. 2 Michigan and No. 3 Illinois.

The Buckeyes return to action at 2 p.m. Sunday when the Evansville Purple Aces invade Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
