Women's Soccer Drops Match To Instate Rival Ohio, 2-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio-- The Ohio State women's soccer team lost Thursday, 2-1, to the Ohio Bobcats in an intrastate match at Athens, Ohio. The Buckeyes saw their record fall to 5-13 overall and 1-9 in the Big Ten after their fifth-consecutive loss. The Bobcats improved to 10-8 overall and 7-4 in the Mid-America Conference following their fourth-consecutive victory.
OSU and OU remained locked in a scoreless tie until the 58th minute of play. Melanie Vierling (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day) crossed the ball in front of the OU goal which was headed into the goal by Bobcat defender Jennifer Wright, resulting in an "own goal" on OU and a 1-0 lead to OSU.
The Bobcats tied the score at one only four minutes later when Christel Schiering scored on a rebound from teammate Jen Barber's shot. OU's Carley Knox set up the goal with a cross to Barber.
OU went ahead for good in the 73rd minute when Lindsey Vondrell headed in a cross pass from Rachel Najjar.
Amber Barnes (Sr., Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) recorded 12 saves for the second time in as many games, while Lindsay Eckles (So., Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) led the offense with four shots.
OSU will conclude its 2000 campaign when it plays host to the visiting Cardinals of Louisville at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Saturday also will be the final match for three seniors, Barnes, Mia Katzel (Sr., Ukiah, Calif./Ukiah) and Amanda Orr (Sr., Brecksville, Ohio/Broadview Heights).
