Columbus, Ohio - The Ohio State women's soccer team (10-3-3, 6-1-3 Big Ten), ranked No. 12 by Soccerbuzz.com and No. 15 in the national coaches poll, faced third-ranked Penn State (14-1-1, 10-0 Big Ten) in its Big Ten finale Friday night in State College, Pa. The Buckeyes fell behind, 2-0, midway through the first half and could not rally as they saw their 13-match unbeaten streak come to an end via a 3-0 defeat. Ohio State had not last a match since the second contest of the season, dropping a 2-1, overtime decision at No. 15/16 Washington Aug. 29 in Seattle.

Despite the loss, Ohio State assured itself of the No. 2 seed as host of the 2004 Big Ten Tournament Nov. 4-7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. Earlier Friday, a Michigan loss at Michigan State locked the Buckeyes into the second seed. The Wolverines will be the No.3 seed, followed by Illinois, which played Northwestern to a tie Friday in Evanston. Purdue wrapped up a No. 7 seed with a 1-0 win at home over Indiana as well. Michigan will face No. 6 Wisconsin. Complete tournament pairings may be found at the bottom of this recap.

Lori Walker, Ohio State head coach, was disappointed with the loss, but foresees a favorable draw in the league tournament.

"Penn State was very effective in the way they play," Walker said. "Their style suits their personnel very well. Tonight, we did not match that personnel and their intensity. We have not been challenged on both sides of the field in a longtime like we were tonight. The beauty of it is we hope to face them again in the tournament. We are the No. 2 seed and in the opposite side of the bracket. It is the highest finish for Ohio State in the Big Ten since I have been here. I am pleased with our record and performance this season. The Big Ten tournament is a grueling series of matches and I am pleased with our seed."

Penn State's Sophie Hiler netted a pair of goals within the first 25 minutes of the match to boost the Nittany Lions to the 3-0 decision. Hiler fired her first scoring shot in the 15th minute, deflecting a ball off an Ohio State defender and past OSU keeper Emily Haynam (Sr., Westerville, Ohio). Hiler added goal No. 2 in the 24th minute, burying a rebounded shot by Big Ten leading scorer Tiffany Weimer to give PSU a 2-0 advantage at the half.

In the second period, Weimer extended Penn State's lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 73rd minute.

For the match, Lisa Grubb (Jr., Portage, Mich.) and Lara Dickenmann (Fr., Kriens, Switzerland) led the OSU attack with Grubb firing four shots and Dickenmann striking three balls. Both recorded two shots on goal. Defensively, Haynam finished the match with five saves.

Both Penn State and Ohio State totaled 11 shots, while Penn State held an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Ohio State recorded six corner kicks to none for Penn State. The match marked just the second time this season Ohio State had been held without a goal. The Buckeyes played Wisconsin to a scoreless draw in Madison earlier this season.

Next up, the Buckeyes step out of league play for the first time in 10 matches, welcoming Loyola-Chicago to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at noon Sunday.
