COLUMBUS, Ohio-Jen Miller (Sr., Dayton, Ohio) scored the game-winning goal in the 107th minute of the second overtime period as the Ohio State women's soccer team defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers today in St. Paul, Minn., 1-0. The win improves the Buckeyes' record to 6-8-1 overall and 4-4-1 in Big Ten play.
At 106:44, Miller fired a free kick from the middle of the Minnesota zone and beat Gopher goalkeeper Marni Prall to the high-right side. The unassisted goal was Miller's third of the season. The win improved OSU's chances of qualifying for the Big Ten Tournament and eliminated Minnesota from postseason play.
Ohio State out-played Minnesota for the majority of the match, but the Buckeyes had nothing to show for their effort on the scoreboard. Ohio State out-shot the Gophers, 19-3 in regulation, including a 13-1 shots-on-goal differential. The Buckeyes out-shot the Golden Gophers, 11-1, in the two overtime periods.
"This game was very similar to games we have had this season," Lori Walker, Ohio State head coach, said. "Our team showed tremendous heart staying after it. We out shot (Minnesota) 30-4 and we couldn't put one in the net all game until Jen's shot in the second overtime. This team has a very strong mentality in that there was no way they were going to lose that game. It is a credit to the character and mentality of this team."
Buckeye goalkeeper Emily Haynam (So., Westerville, Ohio) recorded her second shut out of the season, making two saves in the contest.
The Buckeyes are back in action at 7 p.m. Friday against the Penn State Nittany Lions at Jeffery Field in State College, Pa.
