Columbus, Ohio - The Ohio State women's soccer team, ranked 21st in the latest SoccerBuzz.com poll, needed overtime Sunday to edge Minnesota 1-0 on Senior Day in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The win served as the Buckeyes' 10th of the season against just two losses and three ties and upped Ohio State's mark to 4-2-3 in Big Ten competition. With the loss, Minnesota falls to 5-8-2 overall and 2-6-1 in conference play. The shutout is Ohio State's seventh this season in 15 matches.
The game-winning goal came off the foot of junior forward Kathy Fulk (Dublin, Ohio) in the 96th minute as she received a pass from sophomore forward Colleen Hoban (Stongsville, Ohio) from the right side and deposited the lone goal of the match into the center of the Minnesota net from five yards out. Sophomore Danielle Dietrich (Cincinnati, Ohio) also assisted on the scoring play, which served as Fulk's fourth goal of the season. The assists were No. 4 on the season for Dietrich and the third for Hoban.
Ohio State head coach Lori Walker was pleased with her team's effort in two critical games for the Buckeyes this weekend
"This win solidifies a lot for us this season," Walker said. "It should serve as a major boost of confidence. We needed these two victories this weekend to build momentum heading into the Penn State match Friday night. That is going to be a big match and our team is excited about the challenge ahead of us."
The Buckeyes controlled play throughout the game with a decided 15-6 advantage, but saw the regulation match end in a scoreless tie. Ohio State also owned a 5-1 ledger in shots on goal.
The Buckeyes fronted four scoring attacks in the first period en route to a 10-3 edge in shots heading into halftime, but narrowly missed the net on each trip inside the Minnesota zone. Hoban blasted a shot off the right post at 27:46 mark of the first half before Ohio State mounted a trio of opportunities in the final 10 minutes of the opening stanza. Junior forward Liz Mumley (Woodbridge, Va.) missed wide at 8:51 before senior Jackie Shirer (Medina, Ohio) fired a shot just wide with less than 1:00. Sophomore forward Nicole Braman (Niwot, Colo.) closed out the half with a shot that sailed just high with six second remaining.
Junior Emily Haynam (Westerville, Ohio) and freshman Staci Sinkway (Mission Viejo, Calif.) shared goalkeeping duties, splitting the first and second halves, respectively. Sinkway walked away with win in 50:50 minutes in the net. The tandem accounted for one save on the day.
Prior to kickoff, the Buckeyes celebrated senior day by honoring lone senior Shirer.
Ohio State remains at home next Friday as it plays host to No. 11 Penn State Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
