COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State women's soccer team battled with a very tough Northwestern squad and pulled out a 1-0 victory at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Friday. The Buckeyes improved to 7-7-0 overall and 4-4-0 in the Big Ten after capturing their third-consecutive victory and the Wildcats slipped to 4-8-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the Big Ten.

"We have everyone healthy, on the same page and contributing for us right now," Lori Walker, OSU head coach said. "We are a very good soccer team and Northwestern plays a very disruptive and direct style of game. They are the best team in the air we have seen all year and it was difficult for us to battle with them. I'm pleased we had some good opportunities and so did they. It was a physical Big Ten soccer match."

The match opened with both teams fighting to control the ball and tempo of the match. OSU opened on the offensive early but NU answered back and tested the Buckeye defense with nine shots to OSU's three in the first stanza. Both goalkeepers were up to the task as the Buckeyes' Jen Heaney (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) recorded three saves and her counterpart, Susan McCreery, stopped one.

Though OSU was limited to three shots in the first, Jen Miller (Jr., Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) was able to find the back of the net in the 23rd minute on a penalty kick. Miller shot the ball past McCreery to the top right corner of the goal. The penalty was whistled after Lindsay Eckles (Jr., Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson), the Big Ten offensive player of the week, broke free in the box but was tripped up by an NU defender. The two teams played a tight second half in which OSU outshot NU, 6-5. Both teams displayed a strong attack with the Buckeyes taking 12 corners to the Wildcats' eight. In all, Heaney tallied four saves in her third shut out of the year and McCreery recorded three.

OSU returns to action at 11:30 a.m. Sunday when the Wisconsin Badgers visit Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The time of the OSU-UW match was moved up from 2 p.m. to accommodate fans wishing to attend the MLS Cup at Columbus Crew Stadium.
