COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State Buckeyes slipped by the Northwestern Wildcats in the 81st minute, to record a 1-0 victory and qualify for a spot in the Big Ten Championships Nov. 5-8.
In a scoreless first half, the Buckeyes used every measure to score a goal. An wide left attempt by defender Katie Martorella (Jr., Englewood, Colo.) was no good as it hit the top of the goal box and soared to the left out of bounds. Eight other attempts would prove unsuccessful for the Buckeyes.
Freshman Melanie Vierling (FWD, Cincinnati, Ohio) would answer the Buckeyes prayers with a solid shot in front of the goal. Melissa Fox (So., FWD, Westerville, Ohio) assisted in the only Buckeye goal by dribbling the ball away from goalkeeper Erin Ekeberg and passing left to Vierling. The Buckeyes are 8-6-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the Big Ten. Ohio State plays host to the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay Friday at 3 p.m. at the OSU Sports Field.
