Women's Soccer Slides by Northwestern 3-2 in Double Overtime
Oct. 17, 1999
Ohio State braved brisk winds and rain in a heated Big Ten battle against Northwestern, nailing a 3-2 victory in double overtime.
Northwestern's Christie Molitor put the Wildcats on the board with a goal in the 26th minute. Molitor's shot came off an assist from Katie Hertz and slid past OSU goalkeeper Amber Barnes (Jr., Fairfield, Ohio).
Less than a minute later, Lindsay Eckles (Fr., Hilliard, Ohio) nailed a cross shot into the left side of the net for a Buckeye goal.
Emily Thorpe (So., Sycamore, Ohio) gave OSU its first lead of the game in the 54th minute. Assisted by Katy Traeger (Sr., Littleton, Colo.), Thorpe outmaneuvered her opponent and fired the ball into the back of the net. Northwestern answered with a goal in the 85th minute. Kase McCoy received a pass from Molitor and shot the ball past Barnes.
Both teams set up several scoring attempts, but remained tied at the end of overtime. With two minutes left in double overtime, Shelly Besson (Fr., Kettering, Ohio) fired a shot 12-yards out in front of goalkeeper Susan McCreery for the win.
The Buckeyes are 10-4-3 overall and 5-3-1 in the Big Ten. In their last conference match of the season, OSU hosts Penn State, at 4 p.m., Friday at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
