Ohio State Hosts Michigan State Saturday Evening in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women’s soccer team returns home to face Michigan State at 6 p.m. Saturday at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

OHIO STATE OF LATE
Ohio State posted a 0-1-1 road trip at Minnesota and No. 18 Wisconsin. The Buckeyes outshot the Golden Gophers 20-7 but earned a 0-0 overtime draw last Friday in St. Paul before dropping a 1-0 overtime decision to the Badgers Sunday in Madison. Goalkeeper Jillian McVicker allowed one goal while making five saves in more than 207 minutes of play in the two games.

SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE
Michigan State is 7-4-2 on the season, 1-4-0 in Big Ten play, after dropping a pair of games last week. Mary-Kate Fiebernitz leads the Spartans with five goals while goalkeeper Courtney Clem has seen the majority of time in goal, tallying a shutout and a 1.11 goals-against average.

Ohio State holds a narrow 10-9-0 lead in the all-time series with Michigan State.

BUCKEYES IN THE BIG TEN
Ohio State ranks near the top of the Big Ten in several categories including goals-against average (2nd, 0.65), shutouts (t-4th, 5), corner kicks (2nd, 84) and goals allowed (2nd, 9).

Nichelle Prince sits tied for eighth in the conference with six goals and tied for 10th with 16 points. Jillian McVicker ranks first with a 0.57 goals-against average and is third with an .848 save percentage while Rachel Middleman sits fourth with a 0.78 goals-against average and fifth with an .818 save percentage.


 

 

MULTIPLE BUCKEYES MAKE CONTRIBUTIONS
Twelve Buckeyes have tallied a point so far this season, including seven different goal scorers. Six players have notched their first points in a Buckeye uniform.

FULLER CONTINUES STREAK
Senior defender and co-captain Megan Fuller has been a stalwart on the back line for the Buckeyes over her career. The Bondurant, Iowa, native has not missed a minute of game time since the final game of the 2011 campaign in the Sweet 16 at Duke.

WHAT DO THE COACHES THINK?
Ohio State was picked to finish fourth in the Big Ten preseason coaches’ poll, the conference office announced Aug. 14. Senior Megan Fuller and freshmen Lindsay Agnew and Nichelle Prince were named the Buckeyes’ players to watch.

THE COACHING STAFF
Ohio State is under the direction of 17th-year head coach Lori Walker. She has guided the team to eight NCAA Tournament berths (2002-03-04-07-09-10-11-12), a Big Ten regular season championship (2010) and three Big Ten Tournament championships (2002, 2004, 2012). Her record at Ohio State is 193-127-31 and her career record, including two seasons at Kansas, is 206-150-32.

Associate head coach Glen Tourville is in his sixth season while Jason Goodson enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Buckeyes.

NINE AT HOME AND FREE ADMISSION
The Buckeyes’ schedule includes two more matches at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium this season. Admission is free to all Ohio State women’s soccer home games.

BUCKEYES ON BTN
Ohio State will be on BTN at least three times in 2013. The Buckeyes topped Indiana, 3-1, Sept. 26 in Columbus and dropped a 1-0 overtime contest Oct. 6 at Wisconsin. The 3 p.m. matchup Oct. 17 at Penn State also will be televised on BTN. In addition, the semifinals and championship of the Big Ten Tournament also will be televised on the network.

JESSE OWENS MEMORIAL STADIUM
Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, the home to the Buckeyes, has provided quite the home-field advantage for the women’s soccer team. Some stats about the facility:

- The home team is 103-39-15 all-time.
- Ohio State is 84-22-13 since 2003 and 59-17-9 since 2006.
- The Buckeyes went 9-2-0 at home in 2009, 9-2-2 in 2010, 7-4 in 2011 and 9-1-1 in 2012.

NEXT UP
Ohio State travels to University Park, Pa., to take on Penn State at 3 p.m. Oct. 17 before returning home to face Northwestern on Senior Day at noon Oct. 20. The Penn State match will be televised live on BTN.
