No. 19 Ohio State Women's Soccer Blanks No. 11 Illinois, 3-0
Oct. 10, 2004
Columbus, Ohio - The Ohio State women's soccer team (8-2-3, 4-0-3 Big Ten) remained unbeaten in league action and extended its program-best unbeaten streak to 11 matches with a convincing 3-0 victory over Illinois (10-4, 4-3 Big Ten) Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Lara Dickenmann (Fr., Kreins, Switzerland) netted the match-winning goal in the 21st minute and played a hand on another score as the Buckeyes moved to 6-0-1 at home this season and recorded their fifth shutout of 2004.
"Our patience paid off today," Lori Walker, Ohio State head coach, said. "Some of our past games we got frustrated and moved away from our style of play, but today we kept our focus and scored goals. We beat a great team today and I know we will see this team again."
Dickenmann put the Buckeyes ahead midway through the first half with her fifth goal of the season. The freshman took a feed from midfielder Colleen Hoban (Jr., Strongsville, Ohio) from right-to-left across midfield and advanced to fire a shot past Illini goalkeeper Leisha Alcia from just inside the 18-yard box. Hoban recorded her second assist of the season on the play.
Less than eight minutes later, Ohio State doubled its lead on a header by Lisa Grubb in the 29th minute. Dickenmann started the play, booting a corner kick into the Illini zone that found Megan Stickler, who headed a shot that was deflected and subsequently buried into the right corner of the net by Grubb. The goal was Grubb's seventh this season, which leads Ohio State. On the play, Dickenmann added her fifth assist this season, while Stickler scored her first point as a Buckeye. The scoring concluded when Liz Mumley (Sr., Woodbridge, Va.) sealed the match with a goal in the 89th minute on a shot from 12 yards that glanced off Alcia and trickled into the back of the net. Grubb assisted on the play and moved into the team lead for points (16) with her seven scores and two assists this season. The goal was Mumley's third in 2004.
The Buckeyes dominated play from the onset of the match as Ohio State held an 11-3 edge in shots after the first half and held the Illini without a shot until the 7:18 mark of the first half. For the match, Ohio State fired 24 shots to 10 for Illinois and held a decisive 15-4 advantage in shots on goal and 7-2 margin in corner kicks.
Emily Haynam (Sr., Westerville, Ohio) was credited with the win Sunday, lifting her record to 5-1-2 and her third shutout. Alcia, who had 11 saves, dropped to 10-4 on the year.
The Buckeyes next match is Friday at Minnesota. The game is slated to for a 7 p.m. (CDT) kickoff.
