Columbus, Ohio - The 12th-ranked Ohio State women's soccer team (8-1-2, 2-1-2) upped its record at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium this season to 5-0 with a Big Ten victory over Michigan State (7-4-0, 3-3-0) Sunday in a tight 1-0 defensive struggle. Ohio State junior midfielder Emily Gilbert (Cincinnati, Ohio) headed an Erica Nollen (West Chester, Ohio) corner kick into the Spartan net with less than eight minutes remaining in the match, as the Buckeyes moved to 2-1-2 in conference play.

Ohio State head coach Lori Walker was pleased with how her team found a way to win deep into the match.

"I though we battled hard after playing two overtimes on Friday," Walker said. "We went to our strengths when we had to and were able to convert on the strongest point of our game - corner kicks. Overall, I am very satisfied with our play. Our team has balanced the start of classes and the commitment to soccer very well."

The teams battled through a scoreless first half, as the Buckeyes out shot the Spartans by a 9-5 margin, including two shots on goal that narrowly missed putting the Buckeyes on top. Sophomore midfielder Danielle Dietrich (Cincinnati, Ohio) sailed a shot just past the crossbar less than 15 minutes into the match, while junior forward Kathy Fulk (Dublin, Ohio) blasted a shot from the right flank that connected with the post with a shade more than 12 minutes before intermission.

Ohio State continued to out shoot the Spartans into the second half by a 10-6 margin, but the match remained scoreless until Nollen found Gilbert for her third goal this season, all as a result of corner kick situations. The assist is Nollen's first of the season.

Ohio State freshman goalkeeper Staci Sinkway (Mission Viejo, Calif.) recorded her first career start as well as her first shutout as a Buckeye in the victory. Sinkway, who netted her first win in Ohio State's victory over Cincinnati, tallied three saves, including a key stop in the 89th minute, as the Spartans attempted to send the match to overtime.

The Buckeyes head back to the road next week with a trip to Illinois Friday at 7 p.m. (EDT) and complete the weekend series at Northwestern Sunday at 12:30 p.m. (EDT)
