Michigan Blanks Women's Soccer, 4-0
Oct. 5, 2001
COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State women's soccer team fell in its bid to record two-consecutive wins in Big Ten play this season with a 4-0 loss to visiting Michigan in a constant drizzle at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Friday. The defeat drops OSU's record to 4-6-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the Big Ten and UM, currently atop the conference standings, improves to 6-4-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the Big Ten.
"We played about as bad as I've ever seen us play," Lori Walker, OSU head coach, said. "Michigan has a very good squad. They moved the ball extremely well and we did a lot of 'ball watching.' When you can't mount an attack, the other team's confidence continues to build. We have to forget about this and move forward. We have to play the way our team knows how to play."
The UM defense swarmed the Buckeye attack from the start as OSU could only muster three shots in the first half. The Buckeyes did their fair share of stopping the Wolverines but Stephanie Chavez found a seam through two OSU defenders and shot the ball into the net for the 1-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, OSU doubled its shot output from the first but were shut down by UM's Suzie Grech. Grech tallied four saves in the match. The Wolverines got off nine shots in the second and found the net three times. Carly Williamson opened the second stanza scoring with a goal at 53:05. Sarah Lanham (Jr., Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) was whistled for a foul just inside the penalty box. Williamson shot the penalty kick low to Buckeye goalkeeper Jen Heaney's (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) left side. Heaney stopped the shot but the rebound came to Williamson and she shot the ball into the empty net.
UM's Chavez tallied her second score of the match seven minutes later when Abby Crumpton lifted the ball over the OSU defense and Chavez chipped a shot over Heaney from 18 yards out. The Wolverines concluded their scoring with three minutes remaining when Laney Rosin broke through the defense and slipped her shot under a diving Anna Mitchell (So., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) to the right side of the goal also from 18 yards.
The Buckeyes return to action at 2 p.m. Sunday when the Michigan State Spartans visit Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
