Women's Soccer Shuts Out Iowa, 3-0
Oct. 2, 2005
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's soccer team shut out Iowa, 3-0, Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Lisa Collison scored her eighth and ninth goal for her first two-goal collegiate match. Lara Dickenmann added a third score to help give the Buckeyes their first shutout of the season since defeating Kent State, 3-0, Aug. 28. Ohio State's home record stands at 24-2-3 dating back to 2003.
"We needed an opportunity to attack and today we clicked and connected," Lori Walker, head coach, said. "The biggest monkey off our back is this team's ability to come back from an emotional game Friday and win today."
The Buckeyes scored early in the second half, taking the 1-0 lead at 46:23 when Collison (Fr., Niagara Falls, Ontario/Burlington Flames) received a Caitlin Colfer (Fr., Albany, N.Y./Albertson) cross from the left side of the 18-yard box. Seven minutes later (53:51), defender Keiana Mitchell (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/Dayton Soccer Academy) guided Collison to the top of the box, where she fired a shot past the Iowa goalkeeper. Dickenmann (So., Kriens, Switzerland/Sursee), who scored her second goal of the season, rounded out the Buckeye scoring at the 57:38 mark when she sent a sailing shot into the corner of the net from beyond the right side of the 18-yard spot.
Although the Buckeyes were unable to get on the board in the first half, Ohio State came close to taking the lead 23:38 seconds into the match before the goal was disallowed because of an offside. Collison nearly recorded her eighth goal of the season when Carleta Arbulu (So., Grover Beach, Calif./So Cal United) fed her a shot in the 18-yard box that was kicked into the lower right corner of the net. With Ohio State controlling the offensive pace, the Buckeyes held the shots advantage, 12-2, at the break. For the game, Ohio State out shot Iowa, 27-3, and had five corner kicks to the Hawkeyes' two. Courtney Cripps (Fr., Acworth, Ga./United Quest) and Staci Sinkway (So., Mission Viejo, Calif./So Cal Blues) split time in the net, recording one save a piece, while Iowa goalkeeper Erin MacIsaac made seven stops.
Ohio State returns to Big Ten action at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium when it faces Indiana at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Purdue at 1 p.m. Oct. 9.
