COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State women's soccer team got back on the winning track, snapping its streak of five-consecutive losses with a 1-0 victory on the road at Purdue Monday. The game originally was slated for Sunday but was postponed one day so the Buckeyes could attend the memorial service for Connor Senn. The win raises OSU's record to 4-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the Big Ten and drops the Boilermakers to 4-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Big Ten.
"Purdue is a fantastic team," Lori Walker, OSU head coach, said. "I was very impressed with their abilities and their strength of play. We made some adjustments in our play and it affected our rhythm but allowed us to attack better. We have seen a lot of set plays work for other teams and one finally went our way in a very even match. Considering everything that happened last week, it feels good to come together as a team and get the win."
A set play was the difference in the match as the Buckeyes netted the lone goal on a corner kick in the second half. Sarah Lanham (Jr., Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) took the kick and played it to Lisa Grubb (Fr., Portage, Mich./Portage Central) in the box. Grubb put her head on it and gave the visitors the 1-0 lead at the 62nd minute mark. Jen Heaney (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) recorded five saves in the match to record her second shutout of the year and preserve the win.
The Buckeyes controlled the offensive tempo in each half as they outshot the host team, 16-9, and attempted six corners to PU's two. Seventeen OSU players made an appearance in the match with 11 recording at least one shot.
OSU returns to action at 6 p.m. Friday when it plays host to the Michigan Wolverines at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes also play host to Michigan State in a 2 p.m. Sunday contest.
