COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State women's soccer team suffered a tough 2-1 loss to Indiana Friday at the Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. The loss, OSU's fifth-consecutive, dropped its record to 3-5-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the Big Ten while the Hoosiers improved to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the Big Ten, their best start in program history.
"We're very pleased our offense got back on track and scored," Lori Walker, OSU head coach, said. "It has been a difficult 48 hours but the team stepped up tonight and played with a lot of heart. We still need to improve on our attack. We started seven freshman tonight and the way played indicates to me we will have a bright future."
IU opened the scoring early in the match when Kara Bryan shot the ball past OSU goalkeeper Jen Heaney (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) from 18 yards. Emily Holtz assisted on the play when she crossed the ball in the box to Bryan at the seven minute mark. Heaney tallied one save in the match and IU's Shaunna Daugherty stopped three Buckeye shots.
The Buckeyes responded in the waning moments of the half when Lisa Grubb (Fr., Portage, Mich./Portage Central) netted the equalizer at 41:06. Grubb collected a pass from Sarah Lanham (Jr., Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) on the right side of the box and chipped the ball over the defense and Daugherty from 24 yards away.
Though OSU outshot IU in the first, 5-3, the tables were turned as the Hoosiers outshot the Buckeyes, 8-2. IU's Lisa Tecklenburg scored the gamewinner from 20 yards out in the 67th minute on an assist from Shelly Gruszka.
The Buckeyes return to action at 5 p.m. (EST) Monday at Purdue. The match originally was slated for 2 p.m. (EST) Sunday but was moved ahead one day so the entire team and coaching staff can attend a memorial service for OSU men's soccer freshman Connor Senn. The next Buckeye home match is at 6 p.m. Oct. 5 when it plays host to the Michigan Wolverines.
