No. 12 Women's Soccer Remains Unbeaten with 7-0 Victory
Sept. 21, 2003
Columbus, Ohio - The 12th-ranked Ohio State women's soccer team (6-0-1, 0-0-1) solidified the best start to a season in program history with a dominating performance to record a 7-0 win over Youngstown State (1-6-0, 0-0-0) Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The seven-goals effort serves as the third-highest scoring output in a single game in program history, as the Buckeyes boosted their scoring advantage for the season to an astounding 22-3 ledger.
The Ohio State attack, which outshot YSU by a 30-1 margin, was led by forward Jackie Lafond (Fr./ Milton, Mass.), who scored the first two-goal match of her career, while also recording one assist. Fellow forward Colleen Hoban (So./ Strongsville, Ohio) notched assists on two Buckeye scoring plays and added the first goal of the game for the Buckeyes. Junior defender Paige Harrison (Centerville, Ohio) also added two assists to the OSU stat sheet.
Ohio State used 1-2 scoring punches in the first and second halves, as Hoban tallied her score at the 21:54 mark. Hoban's strike was followed just 10 seconds later by an 18-yard bomb from Heather Miller (Jr./ Centerville, Ohio) at 22:04. Hoban recorded her fifth goal of the season, while Miller's goal served as her third in 2003. Lafond assisted on Hoban's goal with a feed from the left side of the 6-yard box. Junior Emily Gilbert (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded her team-best fifth assist on Miller's goal.
The Buckeyes collected their third and fourth goals within 18 seconds of each other in the second half, as Lafond registered her first of two goals in the match in the 53rd minute. Less than 20 seconds later, junior forward Kathy Fulk (Dublin, Ohio) contributed to the OSU onslaught with her second goal of the season. Senior forward Jackie Shirer (Medina, Ohio) joined the mix with her first goal of 2003, as she capitalized on a Harrison pass from the corner. Ohio State sophomore Danielle Dietrich (Cincinnati, Ohio) also notched her initial goal of the season with a scoring strike from the center of the 6 and 18-yard boxes with just 15 second remaining in regulation. Fellow sophomore Nicole Braman (Niwot, Colo.) assisted on the Dietrich goal.
Junior keeper Jen Heaney (Cincinnati, Ohio) improved to 3-0 on the season, as she helped record Ohio State's fourth shutout in seven contests this season.
Ohio State head coach Lori Walker was pleased with her team's ability to rebound after suffering the squad's first setback of the season with a 1-1 tie versus Iowa Friday night.
"Friday night's tie really stuck in our heads. We wanted to come into today's game with a lot of intensity," Walker said. "But more importantly we needed to finish the game strong. I think we did that today."
Ohio State takes to the road for two matches next week, as the Buckeyes will match up with Indiana at 5 p.m. Friday and will finish the weekend trip with a 1 p.m. match Sunday at Purdue.
