COLUMBUS, Ohio - Freshman Lisa Collison scored the game-winning goal, as the Ohio State women's soccer team topped Northeastern, 2-1, Saturday at the Harvard Invitational in Cambridge, Mass. Harvard went 2-0 to claim the championship. The Buckeyes, who went 1-1 in the invitational, will enter the Big Ten conference slate with a 3-2-2 record. Ohio State will meet Michigan at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Michigan State at noon Sept. 25.
"We've had quite a few personnel changes," Lori Walker, head coach, said. "We lacked rhythm in the first half, but we played a lot better in the second. A lot of people have had to step up in new roles and that is difficult to do."
Ohio State took an early 1-0 lead, scoring at the 18:28 mark. Danielle Dietrich (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Kolping) notched her second goal of the season after she headed in a shot from a corner kick pass courtesy of Caitlin Colfer (Fr., Albany, N.Y./Colonie). The Buckeyes and Huskies were even in corner kicks with three a piece, but Ohio State trailed Northeastern, 8-4, in shots at the half. Courtney Cripps (Fr., Acworth, Ga./United Quest) received the call in the net and registered five saves in the stanza compared to Northeastern's Mariel Wilner's zero.
The Huskies evened the score, 1-1, in the second half after Brenna Matthews scored off a corner kick at 49:54. Kristin Kowalik was credited with the assist. With the Buckeyes out shooting Northeastern 7-4 and holding the corner kicks advantage at 5-3 in the half, Ohio State avoided extra periods when Collison (Fr., Niagara Falls, Ontario) fired a shot into the back of the net at the 85:52 mark off a pass from Colfer.
Ohio State concluded the game with 11 shots, including three shots on goal compared to Northeastern's 12. The Buckeyes and Huskies had eight and six corners, respectively and Cripps tallied seven saves on the afternoon after Northeastern put up eight shots on goal.
