COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's soccer team dropped a close 1-0 contest to Harvard at the Harvard Invitational Thursday at Ohiri Field in Cambridge, Mass. The Buckeyes fall to 2-2-2 on the season, while Harvard improves to 3-2-0. The Buckeyes return for day two of the invitational at 11 a.m. Saturday when they face Northeastern., Ohio -
"We are going to have to fight through these kinds of games," Lori Walker, head coach, said. "Like any sport, soccer can be cruel. We were dominant in our play and possessions. One lapse should not cost us the game."
The first half was an evenly matched contest, as both defenses kept the opposing offenses in check. The Ohio State defense limited Harvard to just five shots and the Buckeye offense was able to tally only three. Harvard held the corner kicks advantage, registering just one more than the Buckeyes at 3-2. OSU goalkeeper Staci Sinkway (So., Mission Viejo, Calif./So Cal Blues) and Crimson keeper Katie Shields put up one save each in the half.
Most of the second half remained scoreless with the Buckeyes, who upped their shot count to 11 in the stanza, holding the Crimson to one shot. However, Harvard's lone strike of the half found the back of the OSU net with less than eight minutes left. Crimson Allison Keeley scored at the 82:42 mark from a redirect pass from Megan Merritt, who intercepted a ball from Jamie Greenwald. Merritt and Greenwald were credited with the assist. Sinkway added another save in the half, bringing the OSU save total to two on the day before being pulled with 3:21 remaining. Freshman Courtney Cripps (Acworth, Ga./United Quest) relieved Sinkway in the 87th minute and recorded no stops.
Ohio State and Harvard were even in corner kicks with three a piece and the Buckeyes made two saves to the Crimson's six. The Scarlet and Gray out shot Harvard 14-6, with six shots on goal.
