Sept. 14, 2003
Columbus, Ohio - The Ohio State women's soccer team (5-0-0, 0-0) tied its best start to a season in program history as the Buckeyes earned their fifth victory in as many games this season with a 3-1 defeat of Coastal Carolina Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The 5-0 mark matches the 1998 squad for the best start in program annals.
Ohio State juniors Emily Gilbert (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Paige Harrison (Centerville, Ohio) converted on two corner kicks, while freshman Jackie Lafond (Milton, Mass) notched her first career score to fuel the Buckeyes. Gilbert put OSU on the board less than 13 minutes into the contest as she headed a Harrison corner past Coastal Carolina keeper Candice Doten and into the left side of the net for her first goal of 2003. Harrison found Gilbert again in the second period, as she connected with Gilbert on another corner kick opportunity to close out the scoring in the 55th minute. Harrison scored her second and third assists in the match.
Chanticleer freshman forward Laura Weiler knotted the game at 1-1 with a shot past extended Buckeye keeper Emily Haynam (Jr./Westerville, Ohio) less than seven minutes after Gilbert's first tally. The Buckeyes answered a shade more than eight minutes later, as LaFond accepted a pass from junior forward Kathy Fulk (Dublin, Ohio) and slid a shot past Doten into the left side of the net for a 2-1 Buckeye advantage at the 16:39 mark.
For the fifth consecutive match Ohio State head coach Lori Walker swapped keepers at the half, as Haynam earned the win with three saves in the first stanza, while freshman Staci Sinkway (Mission Viejo, Calif.) closed out the win for the third-straight match. Sinkway turned away Coastal Carolina's best scoring opportunity of the second half, as she denied consecutive shots by Weiler in the 68th minute. Walker is pleased with the performance of the younger players like LaFond and Sinkway and the leadership displayed by her veterans so far this season. The seventh-year head coach looks to her squad to step up their efforts heading into the Big Ten opener Friday against Iowa.
"Our leadership is continuing to develop," Walker said. "Kathy Faulk, Emily Gilbert and Heather Miller are beginning to emerge as leaders on the field when we need them. We are going to need these girls to step up and pull the reins on this team with Big Ten season approaching."
Ohio State will open its Big Ten slate Friday night as they play host to Iowa at 7:30 p.m. in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
