COLUMBUS, Ohio - It took just seven minutes for the Ohio State women's soccer team to take command of a first year Purdue squad as the Buckeyes defeated the Boilermakers 4-0 at the OSU Sports Field Friday evening. The Boilermakers, in their first season as a varsity program, were held to just three shots as a young but tested Buckeye squad put up 11 and recorded their third shutout of the year.
Melissa Fox (So., Westerville, Ohio) started the Buckeye attack in the seventh minute with a near goal when she blasted a shot into Elizabeth Boldt's stomach, but the Purdue keeper held on for the save. The Buckeyes missed a second opportunity early in the first half when a loose corner kick rolled around the box and went untouched. In the tenth minute, Becky Borchers (Sr., Dayton, Ohio) had a clean shot on goal, but sent it wide for another failed finish.
OSU finally went on top 1-0, in the 14th minute when Katie Martorella (Jr., Englewood, Colo.) settled a ball in the middle of the field and banged it off the left post and in for her first goal of the season.
Melanie Vierling (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) had two chances to score in the first half when she skimmed a ball off the underside of the crossbar, followed her own shot and sent the ricochet into Boldt's hands. The Boilermakers big opportunity in the first stanza came when a corner kick soared all the way through the box untouched until OSU's Tori Moore (Worthington, Ohio) cleared it out of the danger zone.
The Buckeyes poured it on in the second half, scoring three more goals to put the young Boilers away. Mia Katzel (So., Ukiah, Calif.) scored >from just outside the box in the 49th minute when she hammered the ball straight at Boldt and it nicked off a Purdue defender. The redirection caught Boldt off-guard giving way to Katzel's second goal of the season. Martorella set up OSU's third goal in the 60th minute, bending a free kick around the Boilermaker wall and into the crossbar. Brynn Catino (Fr., Westerville, Ohio) sliced through the scattered Purdue defenders and volleyed home her second goal as a Buckeye. In the 72nd minute, Elisa Hamilton (Fr., Westerville, Ohio) sent a corner deep into the box that Borchers touched and Katy Traeger (Jr., Littleton, Colo.) rifled through a crowd and into the net for OSU's fourth and final goal. Amber Barnes (So., Fairfield, Ohio) recorded her third shutout in four games and is on pace to demolish the OSU season shutout mark (7.0 by Nicole Morris in 1994).
OSU's next two matches are at home as the Buckeyes play host to Xavier, Tuesday, Sept. 15 and Illinois Friday, Sept. 18. Both matches are at 8 p.m.
