Columbus, Ohio - The Ohio State women's soccer team (3-2, 0-0 Big Ten) played in the second match of the Buckeye Classic doubleheader Friday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, shutting out LSU (4-1, 0-0 SEC) by a 4-0 count. The win was Ohio State's third straight and second consecutive shutout.
Junior Danielle Dietrich (Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshman Lara Dickenmann (Kreins, Switzerland) each accounted for a goal and an assist as the Buckeyes moved to 2-0 at home, outscoring its opponents 12-1 in the two contests. Overall, the Buckeyes finished the game with a 22-4 advantage in shots, including an 8-1 edge in shots on goal and a 10-0 mark in corner kicks.
"In the first half we were challenged by a strong LSU defense," Walker said. "I think we did a great job creating width. I was pleased with our output both offensively and defensively. Virginia Tech came here to win so it's going to be a tough test Sunday."
The Buckeyes and Tigers played through a scoreless first 25 minutes of play before Dickenmann sent a crossing pass through the LSU box and found junior Lisa Grubb (Portage, Mich.) inside the right side of the 6-yard box where she buried her third goal of the 2004 season at 10:32 of the first half. The assist was Dickenmann's second on the season.
Ohio State upped its lead less than six minutes into the second half as Dietrich struck for her team-best fourth goal of the season after taking a pass from fellow junior Colleen Hoban (Strongsville, Ohio) and firing from the top of the LSU circle. Dietrich's goal, which came at the 39:26 mark of the second period, established a personal high for goals in a season, topping her three scores last season.
Dietrich helped the Buckeyes seal the win in the 72nd minute as she assisted on Liz Mumley's (Sr., Woodbridge, Va.) second goal of 2004. Mumley accepted the Dietrich pass from the right side of the LSU net and fired the scoring strike past LSU keeper Robyn DesOrmeaux into the left corner. Less than six minutes later, a pair of freshmen hooked up to make the score 4-0 as Carla Arbulu (Grover Beach, Calif.) sent a cross through the LSU box and found a streaking Dickenmann, who buried a sliding shot past DesOrmeaux. The goal served as Dickenmann's first as a Buckeye. Arbulu recorded her team-best third assist.
The Buckeyes split duties in the net for the fourth time this season, starting senior Jen Heaney (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the first half before fellow senior Emily Haynam (Westerville, Ohio) entered in the second stanza. Heaney, who returned in the second half after a Haynam injury, was credited with the win, upping her season mark to 2-1.
In the opening match, Dayton snapped a 1-1 tie in the 68th minute to hand Virginia Tech its first loss of the 2004 season. UD's Stacy Palumbo netted the game-winner from just outside the 18-yard box. Virginia Tech took an early 1-0 lead on Ashley Stinson's eighth goal of the early season in the 22nd minute, but the Flyers answered in minute No. 40 as Courtney Sirmans accepted a pass from Palumbo and fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard box to knot the score at 1-1 heading to intermission.
The Buckeye Classic resumes Sunday as Dayton again plays in the opener vs. LSU at 11:30 a.m. The Buckeyes follow in the finale at 2 p.m. against Virginia Tech.
