COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Big Ten Conference today announced it has named Jen Miller (Jr., Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) the defensive player of the week for women's soccer. Miller is Ohio State's second-consecutive Big Ten women's soccer player of the week and the first conference student-athlete to earn defensive player of the week honors. This week marks the first time the conference has honored an offensive and defensive player of the week for women's soccer.
Miller bolstered a stellar Buckeye defense in Ohio State's 2-1 upset victory over No. 9 Connecticut Sept. 7 in the UConn/Diadora Classic at Storrs, Conn.
"I am very pleased Jen Miller has been named player of the week," Lori Walker, OSU head coach, said. "She is well-deserving of this recognition. Jen not only is one of our top defenders but also is one of the best players on our roster."
Miller and the Ohio State defense held the Huskies to just 12 shots on goal. The junior defender tallied two shots on goal over the weekend (one against UConn and one Sunday against Boston College) and for her outstanding defensive play was selected to the UConn/Diadora Classic All-Tournament Team. Miller has one point on the year, off an assist, in the Buckeyes' 5-0 win over Kent State Sept. 2.
Lisa Grubb (Fr., Portage, Mich./Portage Central) was the Big Ten co-Player of the Week last week, the Buckeyes' first honoree of the season.
Ohio State (3-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 in the Big Ten) returns to Columbus this weekend to take on intrastate foe Bowling Green. The Buckeyes square off against the undefeated Falcons (2-0-2 overall, 0-0-0 in the MAC) at 7 p.m. Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
