DAYTON, Ohio - With a 2-1 win at Dayton Wednesday evening, the Ohio State women's soccer team remains untested three games into the season for the first time since 1996. The win moves OSU's record to 3-0-0 overall, 4-3-1 against Ohio schools in away games and also marks the first time the Buckeyes have won three consecutive road games in the history of the program.
Senior Jennifer Plante (Jacksonville, N.C.) put OSU on the board first in the 10th minute when she connected on a penalty kick after the Flyers were called for a foul inside the penalty box. It was the second goal of the season for the 1995 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and the third time in her career she has converted a penalty kick.
The Buckeyes went on top 2-0 in the 33rd minute when senior Becky Borchers (Dayton, Ohio) broke away from the defense and netted a goal in front of the hometown crowd.
Dayton tried to climb back into the game in the second half when Gahanna native Ingred Zielke put in a Jenny Davin corner kick, pulling the Flyers within one with her first goal of the season.
Amber Barnes (So., Fairfield, Ohio) shut down the Dayton offense for the remainder of the game, recording four saves in the second half (six for the match). Zielke's goal was the first of the season given up by Barnes as she had shutout opponents for 237 consecutive minutes (nearly six periods). Barnes was tied for first for goals against average in the Big Ten heading into the contest and was also second for saves (10) and shutouts (2.0).
The Buckeyes open Big Ten competition at home against Purdue, Friday at 5 p.m. at the OSU Sports Field. The Boilermakers boast eight Ohio players on their roster, five of them from the Columbus area.%^$
