Sammy Edwards Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sammy Edwards, a freshman on the Ohio State women’s soccer team, has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. The award is the first for Edwards and the second for a Buckeye this season after goalkeeper Megan Geldernick picked up the honor Aug. 25.
Edwards scored her first-career goal in the second minute and then added two more, one in the 19th minute and another in the 76th, of the Buckeyes’ 4-2 victory over Dayton last Friday night. The hat trick marked the 13th in Ohio State history and the first since Nichelle Prince scored three times in a 6-1 win over Northwestern Oct. 20 of last season.
Ohio State, 3-3-0 on the year, opens Big Ten play with a 7 p.m. match at Indiana Friday before traveling to Purdue for a 3 p.m. match on BTN Sunday.
