Women's Soccer Upsets No. 9 Connecticut, 2-1, In First Road Match

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio-- The Ohio State women's soccer team hit the road for the first time this season and scored a 2-1 upset of No. 9 Connecticut on a second half goal from Courtney Nein (Sr., Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) at the UConn/Diadora Classic in Storrs, Conn., Friday. The Buckeyes improve to 3-0-0 overall (0-0-0 Big Ten) while the host Huskies slip to 2-2-0 overall (0-0-0 BIG EAST).%^$


"We are thrilled to pick up a strong win at this point in the season," Lori Walker, OSU head coach, said. "Our players just fought and fought tonight and really played well as a team. To outshoot the number nine team in the nation on their home field is an accomplishment."%^$


Emily Thorpe (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) put the visiting Buckeyes ahead early in the match with a goal at 4:53. UConn, which outshot the Buckeyes, 6-5, in the first half, netted the equalizer at 28:28 when Kristen Graczyk pushed the ball past OSU's Jen Heaney (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton). Heaney, making her second-consecutive start in goal, recorded four saves in 90 minutes of action.%^$


The Buckeyes came out aggressively in the second half with Nein putting the ball behind UConn goalkeeper Maria Yatrakis at 55:36 to put OSU ahead for good. The Huskies were unable to clear the ball from their defensive end allowing Nein to capitalize. For the match, OSU outshot UConn, 14-12.%^$


OSU, after getting whistled for offsides 15 times against Kent State Sept. 2, was not called for offsides Friday.%^$


The Buckeyes return to action at noon Sunday against Boston College (0-2-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) in the final day of the UConn/Diadora Classic. BC fell to Georgia (2-0-1 overall, 0-0-0 SEC), 3-2, in the first match of the day. OSU's next home match is Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. against intrastate rival Bowling Green (2-0-1 overall, 0-0-0 MAC) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.%^$
