COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 10 Ohio State women's soccer team (2-1-1; 0-0-0 Big Ten) suffered a 1-0 defeat to Furman (2-2-0; 0-0-0 Southern Conference) Sunday at Baujan Field in the Nike Dayton Flyer Invitational in Dayton, Ohio. After beginning the season with four-consecutive road games, Ohio State opens its home slate at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 against Kentucky of the Southeastern Conference.

"We are short on personnel right now," Lori Walker, head coach, said. "It was an opportunity for our young players, but we may need time and experience. Our No. 1 defensive error should not have cost us the game. When we create opportunities, we have to bury them."

Furman took a 1-0 halftime lead after a nearly scoreless stanza in which the Buckeyes had eight shots to the Lady Paladins' 11. Furman's Andre'a Morrison slid a shot past OSU goalkeeper Staci Sinkway (So., Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano) on a breakaway at the 44:36 mark. Both keepers were even with four saves a piece and the Lady Paladins had a 4-1 corner kicks advantage at the break.

Both teams were scoreless in the second half and Furman was able to hold on to its 1-0 lead. The Buckeyes recorded a nine-shot half and after splitting time in the net with teammate Shannon Neely (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/Ohio Premier) in the three previous matches, Sinkway remained in goal, notching three saves. Lady Paladin goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw compiled four saves.

Lara Dickenmann (So., Kriens, Switzerland/Sursee), who was not in action for the Buckeyes in their match vs. Cincinnati Friday, returned to the pitch for Ohio State and tallied nine of OSU's 17 shots, including four that were on goal. Dickenmann and the Swiss national team faced Russia in a World Cup qualifier game Thursday in Switzerland where the Swiss lost, 2-0.

Ohio State posted 17 shots compared to Furman's 18 and registered three corner kicks to the Lady Paladins' seven. Sinkway recorded seven saves and the OSU defense had two team stops. Hinshaw recorded eight saves.
