COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Big Ten Conference today announced it has named Lisa Grubb (Fr., Portage, Mich./Portage Central) co-player of the week for women's soccer. Playing in her first two collegiate matches over the weekend, Grubb accounted for six points to lead the team in scoring. The Buckeyes (2-0-0 overall, 0-0-0 in the Big Ten) opened the 2001 campaign with victories over Wright State (5-2) Friday and Kent State (5-0) Sunday.
"I am excited for Lisa to receive this recognition," Lori Walker, OSU head coach, said. "It is a credit not only to her talent but to our entire team's work ethic over the weekend."
Grubb tallied the game-winning goal (the first of her career) against Wright State in the 59th minute on an unassisted breakaway. Less than five minutes later, she added her second of the match and Ohio State's fourth when she took a pass from freshman Liz Mumley (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) at the top of the 18. Grubb followed that performance with four shots and one goal Sunday against Kent State. She tallied her third of the weekend, a diving header, at the 58:30 mark again from Mumley. For the weekend, Grubb totaled eight shots and three goals.
Grubb shares the honor, Ohio State's first of the season, with senior midfielder Colleen Joyce of Illinois. Joyce also posted three goals for six points to lead the Illini.
The Buckeyes are back in action this weekend in Storrs, Conn. at the UConn Classic. Ohio State will battle No. 10 Connecticut at 7 p.m. Friday and Boston College at 11 a.m. Sunday. The Buckeyes return home to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 to take on instate rival Bowling Green.
